The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is in the market with a two-part, $500 million-plus taxable bond offering that, according to a report from Moody's Investors Service, is expected to have a "notably long maturity of up to 100 years."
The prospectus puts the offering at $500 million, but the Cambridge, Massachusetts university is authorized to sell as much as $750 million. Proceeds are targeted for campus renovations as well as academic and research projects, said Nathaniel Nickerson, a spokesman for Massachusetts Institute Of Technology.

The series B notes are unsecured general obligations of the university, and will be callable by the issuer prior to their scheduled maturity through a 'make-whole' provision, allowing Massachusetts Institute Of Technology to call in some or all of the bonds at any time for the greater or their par, of face value, or a premium over the comparable Treasury rate.

The last time Massachusetts Institute Of Technology came to the bond market was in December 2008, said Nickerson, issuing $226 million in tax-exempt bonds due in 2016, 2026 and 2036. Its last taxable issue was in 1996 for $125 million, also featuring 30-year and 100-year tranches.
